Zoo Troop Programs

Nuture your child's love for animals and nature with Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium's Zoo Troop programs. These programs use the Zoo as a classroom to encourage children of all ages to investigate, play and learn through hands-on activities and exploration.

Register for a Class

Toddlers (3 Years Old or Younger)

Classes for children up to 3 years of age. Pre-registration and payment is required. An adult must accompany the participant. The registration cost covers one adult and one child. Prices reflect the discount member rate.

Stroller Safari

Stride into a world of discovery with a fun story to start your adventure then, walk, talk and learn about specific animals. Don't forget the stroller! Registration fee is $8 and includes one adult and one child. This program is geared toward toddlers ages 1 - 2. 

Zoo-I-Spy - August 10, 10:00 a.m.-10:45 a.m.
I spy with my little eye something…green! Discover all the little things hiding in nature as we explore the world around us.

Rad Reptiles - September 14, 10:00 a.m.-10:45 a.m.
From sticky tongues to scaly bodies come join us and discover why reptiles are so rad!

Bird Bonanza- October 12, 10:00 a.m.-10:45 a.m.
Wonderful Wings Wings flutter and flap and they make things go. Some go high and some go low. Meet animals in this class that have wings!

Rocking Reptiles and Awesome Amphibians - November 9, 10:00 a.m.-10:45 a.m.
They may not be cute and cuddly on the outside, but reptiles and amphibians play a very important role on planet Earth. Join us as we learn about our scaly and slimy skinned friends.

 

Early Explorers

Gather your gear and join our explorers program for 2 to 3-year-old children. We will uncover a wide variety of topics including colors, patterns, shapes, habitats and biomes. Imagine the discoveries that will be made!

All the Ways that I Love You – July 20, 10:00 - 10:45 a.m.
Animals show love by taking care of their young.  Come and discover the many different ways animals show they care.

Night Prowl - August 17, 10:00 a.m.-10:45 a.m.
Have you ever wondered what happens at the zoo when the lights go off and the gates close? Learn about the animals that go bump in the night!

Jungle Boogie - September 21, 10:00 a.m.-10:45 a.m.
Jungle boogie through the Zoo—with a hop, a skip, and a jump, your camper will explore critter moves and grooves! Fanciful footwork, whimsical whirling, and synchronized strutting will highlight some of the Animal Kingdom's greatest performers. It's sure to put a spring in their step!

A-Z Animals - October 19, 10:00 a.m.-10:45 a.m.
From armadillos to zebras and all of the letters in between, campers will learn the alphabet of animals!

Mad about Mammals - November 16, 10:00 a.m.-10:45 a.m.
Some have armor and some have quills. Some have fur and some even have bills!

Zoo Troop Cubs Programs (Ages 3 - 4)

Cubs programs are for children ages 3 - 4. Pre-registration and payment of $15 per child per session is required. An adult must accompany the participant. The registration cost covers one adult and one child. Prices reflect the discount member rate.

Through science-based exploration and outdoor play, preschoolers and their caregivers will experience Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium using their senses. Each adventure begins with an opportunity to explore several learning stations based on the adventures theme where children can practice fine motor skills, sensory investigation, creativity, and pre-math and literacy skills. Station time is followed by an opening circle, listening to a story and further exploring the weekly theme.

Jr. Zookeeper –July 27, 10:00 - 11:00 a.m.
Learn what it takes to care for animals at the Zoo from the people who do it every day.

Animal Coverings - August 3, 10:00 a.m.-11:00 a.m.
Explore furred, feathered, slimy and scaly animal "wrappers." Learn how animal groups are alike or different from each other and how to sort them using clues from their "coverings."

Born to be Wild - September 7, 10:00 a.m.-11:00 a.m.
Do all animal babies look like their parents? Which animals hatch from eggs, and which are live-born? This class compares animal babies and development while introducing the basic concepts of life cycles (including metamorphosis) in both invertebrates and vertebrates.      

I Like to Move It - October 5, 10:00 a.m.-11:00 a.m.
This class looks at various forms of animal locomotion as examples of an adaptation. Hopping, swimming, climbing, flying and slithering animals are just a few of the movements featured. Examine the animals' body parts to discover how and why they move the way they do.

Bump in the Night - November 2    10:00 a.m.-11:00 a.m.
Experience Como at night and discover whoooooo-hoooooo is awake. Bump into nocturnal plants and animals while learning about the adaptations they use to survive at night. Come join us for a howling good time!

Zoo Troop Pounce Programs (Ages 5 - 6 and 7 - 9)

L.I.O.N. ZOO TROOP

L.I.O.N. Zoo Troop is a new series-based class where children learn to understand and respect the world around them through exploration and up-close animal encounters. Kids will be challenged to work together, get outside and have fun!

The Biggest and the Smallest Series (ages 5-6 years) – Join us on our next adventure as we learn about some the biggest, smallest, heaviest, tallest and fastest animals of their kind. Elephants - Crunch the Numbers (ages 7-9 years) – August 11, 1:00 p.m.-3:00 p.m.
Math enthusiasts will learn how to help the Zoo's elephant keepers by adding up the numbers and discovering what it takes to care for the gentle giants! 

Jr Marine Biologist Series (ages 7-9 years) – September 15, 29 and October 13       10 a.m.-Noon
Life under water is amazing! Discover the critters who call this place home and meet a few of our very own water-loving animal care crew members. Cost is $45 for all three programs ($18 per program if registering separately). Please call (402) 738-2092 to receive the series discount.

Jr Keeper Program (ages 10-12 years) – Sept. 1, Oct. 6, Nov. 3, Dec. 1       10 a.m.-12 p.m.

Did you know there are nearly 20 different crews that care for the Zoo animals? Join us for this series-based class as we explore many of these areas. Meet a keeper, get a behind-the-scenes peek, and discover just what it takes to make animal care a career. Cost is $60 for all four programs ($18 per program if registering separately). Zoo Troop Pride Programs (Ages 13 - 18)

Pride programs are for young adults ages 13 - 18. Pre-registration and payment required. Prices reflect the discount member rate.

Endangered Animals & Conservation - Sept. 22, Oct. 20, Nov. 17    10:00 a.m.-Noon
Through activities and investigation, students will learn about threatened species from around the globe, as well as people in Omaha who are working to help them survive. Marine Biology - Dec. 8, Jan. 12, Feb. 9    10:00 a.m.-Noon
Students will be introduced to the ocean and marine life through the Zoo's aquarium and hands-on labs. This is a great opportunity for students who are interested in the field of marine biology or who have had little interaction with the ocean. Family Zoo Adventures

Family Zoo Adventures are geared toward families with children. Pre-registration and payment of $16 per participant. A minimum of one adult and one child is required ($32 total, unless otherwise noted). Prices reflect the discount member rate and may vary based on event offered. Questions? (402) 738-2092.

Supper with Santa - December 14-15, 21-22   6:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m.

It's that time of year for Mr. and Mrs. Claus to make their annual trip to Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium for Supper with Santa! Enjoy a spaghetti dinner, activity stations, story time, exploring Scott Aquarium and of course, pictures with Santa!

Cost is $23 per person for Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium members, $28 for non-members and children 2 and under are free. Reservations are required for this all-inclusive event. All children must be accompanied by an adult. All sales are final.

Adult Programs (Ages 18 and Older)

Adult programs are those ages 18 and older. Pre-registration and payment is required. Prices reflect the discount member rate.

Brush up on your photography skills by attending one of our Zoo or Wildlife Safari Park workshops!

Photography at the Zoo and Wildlife Safari Park (ages 18 & older)

Would you like to learn how to take animal photos both at the zoo and in the outdoors? Or perhaps you're getting ready for the trip of a lifetime or you simply want to understand your camera better.  

The class has plenty to offer:

  • You’ll receive expert wildlife and zoo photography instruction from award winning photographer Pasquale “Pat” Mingarelli.
  • Early access to the Zoo on Thursday and Saturday.
  • Early access to the Lee G. Simmons Conservation Park and Wildlife Safari on Thursday.
  • Professional critique of photos you shoot at the Zoo.
  • Instruction on what to do about fences, glass, shooting in the aquarium and Zoo obstacles.
  • Workshop participants will have plenty of opportunities to ask Pat questions about their photos.
  • Group size is limited to 16 participants to allow for quality instruction.

Dates (October 25-27)

  • October 25 at Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium from 8:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. 
  • October 26 at Lee G Simmon's Wildlife Safari Park from 8:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
  • Saturday, October 27 (8:30 a.m. to Noon) at the Zoo and Durham Museum. Workshop participants will attend a special presentation by a world-renowned wildlife photographer at Durham Museum and view the exhibit following the presentation.

Fee is $90 for members ($110 for non members).
