L.I.O.N. Programs

Nuture your child's love for animals and nature with Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium's L.I.O.N. programs. With the Zoo as their classroom, teachers encourage children to investigate, play and learn through hands-on activities and exploration.

Register for a Class

Toddlers (3 Years Old or Younger)

Classes for children up to 3 years of age. Pre-registration and payment is required. An adult must accompany the participant. The registration cost covers one adult and one child. Prices reflect the discount member rate.

Stroller Safari

Stride into a world of discovery with a fun story to start your adventure then, walk, talk and learn about specific animals. Don't forget the stroller! Registration fee is $8 and includes one adult and one child. This program is geared toward toddlers ages 1 - 2.

One, Two, at the Zoo – November 3, 10:00 - 10:45 a.m.
We have two feet, but some animals have more and some less. Practice your numbers as we meet animals with different numbers of legs!

Zoo Babies – January 12, 10:00 - 10:45 a.m.
Animals start off small, but grow strong and tall. Learn all about baby animals and how they grow.

Go Gorilla – February 9, 10:00 - 10:45 a.m.
Birds are not the only ones who makes nests – gorillas do, too! Learn and discover everything that make gorillas great.

Sensory Safari – March 9, 10:00 - 10:45 a.m.
Do you smell with your tongue or taste with your feet? Compare how you use your five senses and the way animals do!

Early Explorers

Gather your gear and join our explorers program for 2 to 3-year-old children. We will uncover a wide variety of topics including colors, patterns, shapes, habitats and biomes. Imagine the discoveries that will be made!

Wild About Art – November 17, 10:00 - 10:45 a.m.
Calling all creative animal lovers! We will explore your creative side using a variety of materials and art techniques while being led in an animal-inspired project. Join us and have a wild time!

Counting with a Keeper – January 26, 10:00 - 10:45 a.m.
Being a zoo keeper is really fun. Feeding animals is a daily activity and keepers need to be good at counting out food items. Come and join us as we learn to count with a zoo keeper.

Look Up in the Tree! – February 23, 10:00 - 10:45 a.m.
They climb, they fly and they swing. Learn about animals that call trees home.

Blooming Butterflies – March 23, 10:00 - 10:45 a.m.
Black, gold, green, and blue…butterflies are really cool. Join us as we discover what butterflies eat, how they grow, and why they come in so many colors.

Cubs Programs (Ages 3 - 4)

Cubs programs are for children ages 3 - 4. Pre-registration and payment of $13 per child per session is required. An adult must accompany the participant. The registration cost covers one adult and one child. Prices reflect the discount member rate.

Getting Around – November 10 or 11, 10 - 11 a.m.
Walking is fine, but how else do animals get around? Come learn about the different ways animals move from here to there. Scoot, hop, fly, or run to this animal adventure!

Cold Weather Animals – January 19 or 20, 10 - 11 a.m.
Brrr! How do you stay warm in winter? Animals have many ways to keep warm outside in the cold and snow. Some animals, including reindeer, grizzly bears and wolves, endure the most extreme winter weather.

Silly Old Bear - February 16 or 17, 10 - 11 a.m.
Grab your favorite stuffed bear and bring it along to see some real bears in action! We will learn all about the different kinds of bears you will meet here at the Zoo.

Meet Under the Sea – March 16 or 17, 10 - 11 a.m.
Ever wonder about the animals that live in water? There is a whole world ready to explore right below the surface. Come explore some of the animals that live in the mysterious aquatic areas of the world.

Pounce Programs (Ages 5 - 6 and 7 - 9)

Pounce programs are for children ages 5 - 9. Pre-registration and payment of $16 per child per session is required. An adult must accompany the participant. The registration cost covers one adult and one child. Prices reflect the discount member rate.

L.I.O.N. ZOO TROOP

L.I.O.N. Zoo Troop is a new series-based class where children learn to understand and respect the world around them through exploration and up-close animal encounters. Kids will be challenged to work together, get outside and have fun!

Zoo Troop: Fur, Feathers and Scales - November 11, 18, 25, 10 a.m. - Noon

Meet animals from all walks of life: mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and six-legged critters, too. Cost is $45 for all three programs or $16 per programi if registering separately.

L.I.O.N. ZOO TROOP

L.I.O.N. Zoo Troop is a new series-based class where children learn to understand and respect the world around them through exploration and up-close animal encounters. Kids will be challenged to work together, get outside and have fun!

Zoo Troop: Jr. Keeper - January 20, 27, February 3, 1 - 3 p.m.

It takes a lot to run a zoo with 17,000+ animals! Find out how our keepers care for the animals and get an up-close view of some of our favorites. Cost is $45 for all three programs. Cost is $16 per program if registering separately. Please call (402) 738-2092 to receive the series discount. Only available to 7 - 9 year olds.

Mane programs are for children ages 10 - 12. Pre-registration and payment is required. Prices reflect the discount member rate.

Zoo Troop: Africa Grasslands Keeper

Join is for this series-based class and meet the keepers who care for our African Grasslands, learn about the animals they care for and get a behind-the-scenes peek. Cost is $60 for all four programs. Cost is $16 per program if registering separately.

Pride Programs (Ages 13 - 18)

Pride programs are for children ages 13 - 18. Pre-registration and payment of $25 per session is required unless noted otherwise. Classes are from 9 a.m. - Noon unless noted otherwise. Prices reflect the discount member rate.

From marine biology to animal behavior, the wide variety of possible careers in the animal field is endless. During Career Discovery Days, students will explore various career options. Participants in the event will hear from zoo professionals during scheduled presentations, participate in special tours and interact with other students with similar career interests.

Zookeeper - November 4, 9 a.m. - Noon
Do you love animals and want to explore the career possibilities of becoming a zookeeper? Join us and meet with keepers to learn how to become part of this exciting career field.

Marine Biologist - December 2, 9 a.m. - Noon
We will look at the work of an Aquarist as well as career possibilities in Marine Biology. Come and get your “feet wet” and see if this career is where you want to be.

The Science of Poop - January 6, 9 a.m. - Noon
Believe it or not, you can learn a lot from poop! We will take a look at our Nutrition Department, find out what it takes to feed 17,000-plus animals, learn about the waste they produce, what it tells us about their health and find out just how we manage it.

Adult programs are those ages 18 and older. Pre-registration and payment is required. Prices reflect the discount member rate.

Family Zoo Adventures (with Children Ages 4 - 9)

Family Zoo Adventures are geared toward families with children ages 4 - 9. Pre-registration and payment of $16 per participant. A minimum of one adult and one child is required ($32 total). Prices reflect the discount member rate. Call (402) 738-2092 to register.
