The Omaha Zoo Railroad Celebrates its 50th Anniversary

The Omaha Zoo Railroad is celebrating its 50th anniversary today and Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium will be celebrating all week long.  The Railroad’s official Golden Spike dedication ceremony took place on July 23, 1968. Mayor A.V. Sorenson and Edd H. Bailey, Union Pacific’s president at the time, drove the brass-plated “golden spike” at the ceremony that officially marked the completion of the Omaha Zoo Railroad. Pygmy Hippo Calf Makes His Debut

A male pygmy hippopotamus calf, born on April 30, is now in its habitat in Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium’s Lied Jungle®.  The calf, named Silas by his keepers, can be seen in the exhibit’s African rainforest with the dam, Chomel, an 18-year-old from Lincoln Park Zoo in Chicago, Illinois. King Penguin Chick to Join Other Penguins in Scott Aquarium

A four month old King penguin chick will enter its habitat in the Suzanne and Walter Scott Aquarium for the first time tomorrow. The chick, whose sex is currently unknown, is extremely valuable to the North American King penguin population as it is the first offspring for two wild hatched birds. World Giraffe Day

Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium will be celebrating World Giraffe Day on Thursday, June 21 with giraffe-centered programming in African Grasslands and Facebook Live streaming events.  Facebook Live programs will take place on the Zoo’s Facebook page at 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Viewers will get an up close look at a few members of the herd and get to watch a special training demonstration.   Zoo guests have the option to donate to giraffe conservation in $1... March and April Road Closures and Travel Information

Beginning March 19th, there will be road closures that may affect how you get to and from the Zoo. Newly Renovated Lozier Giant Screen Theater to Open on Friday

Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium’s newly renovated Lozier Giant Screen Theater® will open to the public on Friday, March 30. The Theater has been closed for upgrades since January 15. Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium contracted D3D Cinema to lead its digital 3D projection system upgrade, which includes a new projection system, screen and sound system. Wildlife Safari Park to Open for the Season on Friday

Wildlife Safari Park in Ashland will open for the season on Friday, March 30. The Park will be open daily 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wildlife Safari Park offers four miles of drive-through North American wildlife viewing from the comfort of your own vehicle. Zoo Collaborates with Mashatu Game Reserve in the Field and at Home

Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium’s collaboration with the Mashatu Game Reserve in Botswana doesn’t end with conservation efforts in Africa.
